Engel visited Greece in 1886 and travelled around the country by boat, train, on horseback and, sometimes, on foot. He is very critical of Fallmerayer's opinions on the Greeks. Engel's work includes detailed descriptions of the customs and manners of the Greeks, the Easter celebrations, the state of education and schools in Athens, and comments on the Greek language and pronunciation,
