Remarks content

The author started on his journey sometime around Christmas 1837. After crossing Italy, in mid-April 1838 he sailed from Malta to Greece, travelling along the coast of the Peloponnese. He spent time in Syros (while at quarantine) and then went to Athens, where he met the Austrian Envoy Prokesch von Osten (1795-1876), Christian August Brandis (1790-1867), who was King Otho's lecturer in history, and Professor Ulrich, who had been commissioned by the German government to revise schoolbooks in Greek. He also met Dr Roser, personal physician to the King. After brief excursions to Pireaus and Eleusina, he travelled by boat to the Peloponnese. In Tripolis he met a military doctor Herr Imminger, the forest inspector of Tripolis Schmittschneider, as well as Otto Borcherdt, the forest secretary. His visit to Sparta occassions the author's wrath at what he calls the "archaeological crimes" of Abbe Fourmont. The account also includes information on the way of travelling around Greece and the author's reflections on the Greek people.
