This work was first published in English in 1879. Samuel White Baker, who was a British explorer and writer, was in Cyprus from January to August 1879, shortly after the British occupation of the island began (1878). The German edition does not include the frontispiece showing the travelling party, which is included in the English edition (see entry number 351). The German version also lacks the Appendix, which is present in the English edition of 1879, most probably because it contains information and reflections of principal interest to the English, recent occupiers of the island.
