Remarks content
The record of a voyage which lasted from January to August 1879, i.e. shortly after the British occupation of Cyprus began (1878). The author, who was a British explorer and writer, travelled in carriages especially manufactured for him and sent over from England. The frontispiece shows the travelling party, which also included his second wife, Florence Baker, nee von Sass; it is most probably based on a photograph taken on the spot by an itinerant photographer that the travellers met outside Larnaca. The writing of the book was completed in the Monastery of Trooditissa in Cyprus. Indeed, the Greek Orthodox Church, with its tenets and rituals, and Greek Orthodox monasticism, are main preoccupations of the author.
