General Remarks

First edition, second issue (?) of a work frequently reprinted, sicne it was used was a school manual. The EJF collection includes two further works by Samuel Butler, the third and eighth editions of his "A Sketch of Modern and Ancient Geography" (see entry numbers 465 and 3554 respectively), also meant for use in schools. References: Blackmer 259 (on second edition).

Remarks content

First edition, second issue (?) of a work frequently republished as it was meant for use in schools. The British Library holds a copy (Maps 37.b.9) with a title page bearing the date 1822 and the names of the publishers given in a different order to the copy described here; the atlases and maps, however, are either undated or else bearing the date 1826 and are exactly the same as in this copy. The only other difference is the Printer's Imprint (London: Printed by A & R Spottiswood New-Street-Square), which here appears at the bottom of the final page of the Index, whereas in the BL copy is printed on its verso.
