General Remarks

Eighth edition of a work first published in Shrewsbury in 1813 and reprinted frequently for use in schools. The eighth edition is considerably revised and enlarged. The Preface is signed 1825. The EJF collection also includes the third edition of this work, published in 1814 (see entry number 465) as well as the first edition, second issue (?) of Butler's "Atlas of ancient geography" published in London in 1826 (see entry number 3670).

Remarks book

Provenance: "King's Inns Library Dublin" stamp on title page verso. Hand-written name of previous owner erased, but inscription "Dublin, November 1848" remains on title page.

Samuel Butler was also the author of atlases on modern and ancient geography, also published for use in schools. It is probable that the work described here work could be used in conjunction with Butler's own Atlases, which the students are directed to within the text, but by no means obliged to buy.
