General Remarks

Third edition of a work first published in Shrewsbury in 1813 and reprinted frequently for use in schools. According to the Preface, this edition corrects some of the errors found in the first and second editions. The EJF collection also includes the eighth edition of this work (see entry number 3554) as well as Butler's "Atlas of ancient geography", also used as a school manual (see entry number 3670).

Remarks book

Ex-Libris: Lord Walsingham [Thomas, 4th Baron Walsingham (1778-1839)]. [62]=Index; [8]=Advertisements for new works published by Gale, Curtis and Fenner.

Remarks content

Butler bases his descriptions of various countries on the maps and text of Pinkerton and D' Anville; for Greece, however, he follows De Lisle. The description of Athens is based on Abbe Barthelemy's "Anacharsis".
