Remarks content
In his capacity as tutor to King Otto, Brandis travelled around Greece with the King and Queen Amalia in October 1837 and May-June 1839. He also travelled extensively with his friend Karl Ritter in October 1837 and with Ernst Curtius in March 1837 and February and August 1838. The book described here combines information from all these journeys. The first volume provides the reader with an overall view of Greece and also describes the majority of the author's travels. In the second volume Brandis suns up a number of works by Greek authors and their writings on Modern Greece and the War of Independence, dealing mainly with events and warfare between 1822 and 1827. The third and final volume describes the condition of the Greek people and the new state, with particular emphasis on education, literature (especially poetry), religion and the Church.
