A collection of Curtius' speeches and lectures, mainly on the art and history of ancient Greece, given between 1853 and 1875 at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen, where Curtius taught classics and history. The book carries a dedication to Curtius' friends Emanuel Geibel (1815-1884) and Heinrich Kruse (1815-1902), who were his fellow-students in Berlin and noted men of letters. Apart from the university lectures, the book also contains a speech made in 1853 on the occasion of Schinkel's birthday, as well as another, given in 1874, to commemorate the birthday of Friedrich II, in 1874.
