Vischer, Wilhelm

Wilhelm Vischer was a University Professor in Greek Language and Literature and a high-ranking member of the governing body of the University of Basel. He was extremely interested in the ancient history of Greece and wrote numerous books on the subject. Vischer travelled to Greece twice, once in 1853-4 and later in 1862.

The work described here refers to his first journey and combindes detailed first-hand descriptions with the author's wide-ranging knowledge of ancient Greek history. The journey began in the autumn of 1852, when the author travelled to Italy. In March 1853 Vischer boarded a ship that took him from Trieste to Corfu and from thence to Athens, where he was in contact with Dr. Röser, physician to the King. Vischer then undertook various excursions through Attica, accompanied by Dr. A. von Velsen. He paid a visit to the French fleet, then stationed at Salamina, and also visited Navarino, where he stayed with Dr. Imminger. His return voyage took him back to Germany from Constantinople on the river Danube.
