The author travelled to Crete sometime between 1870 and 1877. Travelling by boat, he sailed along the coast of western Greece without alighting anywhere and went to Egypt and Cyprus. He then went to Crete, via Smyrna and Syros. He travelled extensively around Crete, visiting Herakleion, Rethymno and Chania as well as various monasteries throughout the island. Topics covered in the book include: the rebellion between 1821 and 1827, the fights of 1866 and 1867-1869, the history of Crete during the Turkish occupation, and Crete in ancient times.
