English adaptation of a work first published in German in 1878. Comparison with the German text reveals that this is an extremely free translation, where Mary Anne Joyner leaves out some chapters, and groups information contained in various chapters in different order. Added material can be found scattered throughout the book. The Appendix is new to the English edition. The EJF collection includes three copies of the first edition of this work (see entry numbers 1028, 2308 and 2310) as well as two copies of the third edition, published in 1879 with a new Preface by the author and a map of the island (see entry numbers 3584 and 2309). The English translation, by Mrs. Mary Anne Joyner, was also published in New York in 1878 and the EJF collection includes two copies of that edition (see entry numbers 2312 and 2313).

Franz von Löher was a University Professor and Member of the Academy of Sciences.

Η ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΙΔΙΑ ΜΕ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΗΓΟΥΜΕΝΟΥ. Löher visited Cyprus in April 1875. He arrived there by way of Alexandria, Cairo, Port Said and Beirut. While in Cyprus he met the American consul Louis Palma di Cesuola, who presided over a series of excavations in the island. Löher travelled widely around the island, visiting various sites and monasteries. His work contains a wealth of information on the ancient, medieval and contemporary history of Cyprus. Other major themes covered in the book are the island's natural history, agriculture and the manners and customs of its inhabitants.
