William Macmichael was a physician who was elected into a Radcliffe travelling fellowship in 1811. He travelled for several years visiting Greece, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. In 1812, whilst in Thermopylae, he contracted malaria and suffered from intermittent fevers for the next couple of years. He returned to the Continent for another journey in 1817-1818, before settling to a practice in London. In 1819, he published an account of his travels, illustrated by his own drawings.

Remarks content
William Macmichael published an account of his travels, illustrated by his own drawings, in 1819. There are references to the author's earlier visit to Greece in 1812, as well as to Sir Robert Liston, English Ambassador in Constantinople. Macmichael was acquainted with E. Dodwell and includes information passed on to him by the earlier traveller. The author mentions that in 1817-1818 he travelled in the company of Mr. Thomas Legh, M.P. (1793-1857) but whereas Macmichael was obliged to return to England, Legh continued on his travels and departed for Constantinople and Palestine on March 15, 1818. The fourth, and final, chapter of the book describes this leg of the journey: a great part of it was either written, or based on notes prepared, by Legh. Legh travelled together with Mr. Bankes and Captain Irby (both of the Royal Navy), Captain Mangles, Captain Corry and Lord and Lady Belmore. This journey is also recounted in Robert Richardson's "Travels along the Mediterranean" (published in 1822 and included in the EJF collection, entry numbers 2454-2455).
